Veterans Educational Benefits Information
- CH 30 students receive a monthly benefit based on a number of factors (time of service, “kickers”, and type of training a student is taking). To get a clear picture of what a student’s monthly benefit would be, they should call the VA education hotline.
- Note: no tuition/fees are paid directly to the school. The student is responsible for paying their tuition/fees.
- CH 30 students do not receive a book stipend, but they are eligible to receive tutoring assistance.
- Montgomery GI Bill® has a time limit of 10 years from the date of EAS.
- For more information and how to apply, please visit: https://www.va.gov/education/about-gi-bill-benefits/montgomery-active-duty/

-
If I’m eligible for GI Bill benefits, can I get paid the Post-9/11 GI Bill subsistence rate for my VR&E program?
If you’re participating in a VR&E program, you can choose to get paid the GI Bill® subsistence rate instead of the Chapter 31 subsistence allowance rate if you meet both of these requirements.
Both of these must be true:
- You have at least 1 day of entitlement remaining under the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, and
- You’re within your GI Bill® eligibility period
Note: In most cases, the GI Bill® rate is higher.
You’ll need to officially choose the GI Bill® subsistence rate.
-
Will VA deduct my VR&E benefits from my VA education entitlement?
If you use VR&E benefits, the VA won’t deduct entitlement from your other VA education benefits, like the Post-9/11 GI Bill® or the Montgomery GI Bill®.
If you’ve used benefits under any other VA education program and then you use VR&E benefits, they’ll have to deduct from your remaining VR&E entitlement the amount of time used under the other VA education program.
But if you already used other VA education benefits and we determine that you’re eligible for VR&E, we may retroactively approve your previous months of entitlement and return them to the other VA education program. This is called “retroactive induction.” Ask your VRC if you meet the eligibility criteria for a retroactive induction.
- Post 9/11 GI Bill® has a time limit of 15 years from the date of EAS if your EAS was before January 1st, 2013.
- Chapter 33 students receive a monthly housing allowance, a book stipend, tuition and fees paid directly to the school, and tutoring assistance.
- Chapter 33 dependents that have been transferred the Chapter 33 entitlement are eligible for all the same benefits.
- For more information and how to apply, please visit:
- Chapter 35 is a benefit that is afforded to dependents when a service member (their sponsor) is 100% disabled due to service-connected disabilities or they are deceased (KIA or had 100% rating at the time of death).
- Children using this benefit generally have to be within the ages of 18-26. Spouses are eligible 10 years after the VA determines eligibility or 10 years after their spouse’s death.
- Chapter 35 students are allowed to use Veterans Priority Registration while they are using their Chapter 35 benefits.
- Note: No tuition/fees are paid directly to the school. The student is responsible for paying their tuition/fees.

Historically, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Education Service (EDU) has allowed the practice of “rounding out” in which VA allows a school to certify for payment courses which are not a part of the beneficiary’s approved program of education in an effort to increase a beneficiary’s training time. Rounding out is only allowed during the beneficiary’s final academic term. By authorizing payment for these extra courses (courses which are potentially completely unrelated to the beneficiary’s program of study or vocational objective) GI Bill® students are eligible for full benefit payments, particularly maximum allowable housing allowance (MHA) under chapter 33, during this final term. Effective August 1, 2021, this practice will be limited to payments for pursuit of an approved program of education or training.
VA has amended its policy for “rounding out” to specify that any additional class(es) taken during the last term for the purpose of increasing training time or rate of pursuit, up to full-time, while not required for the specific beneficiary to graduate, are included within the program and would count toward an enrolled individual’s graduation requirements. Such classes must be specified by name in the approved program curriculum, and not have been already completed. A Veteran student can round out a schedule with additional courses to bring his/her course load up to a full-time schedule in his/her last term only. This allows students to continue to receive benefits at the full-time rate in their last term of enrollment, even though fewer credits are required to complete the program.
This procedure can be done only once per program.
EXAMPLE: A claimant needs to complete 126 credit hours to graduate with a BS degree in Global Management. As a graduation requirement, they have the choice to take two of four courses during their last term; they decide to enroll in all four courses, in order to be considered full-time during their last term in college. The claimant does not necessarily need all these additional hours but wants to “round out”. In this scenario, VA will allow the claimant to “round out” and take all four courses because they are still included within the program of education. Chosen classes must be specified by name in the curriculum.
NOTE: This concept may be used for Non-College Degree (NCD) schools offering courses in credit hours and operating on a term, block or unit basis. However, an NCD school on a clock-hour basis is not authorized to use this.
San Diego Global Knowledge University (SDGKU) is proud to participate in the Yellow Ribbon G.I. Bill Education Enhancement Program, also known as the Yellow Ribbon Program. For more information on the Yellow Ribbon program, inlcluding eligibility requirements, participation, and contributions, please click here.

The Education Center will assist you in the application process and help you understand the rules and regulations pertaining to the use of TA.
The Evaluated Degree Plan is an official academic document that is provided by San Diego Global Knowledge University’s veterans admissions counselor which articulates all degree requirements for degree completion, identifies all courses required for graduation, and includes an evaluation of all successfully completed prior coursework. Evaluated credit for military training and experience and other credit sources applied to San Diego Global Knowledge University’s degree requirements are also included.
Army and Air Force Active Duty
Soldiers need to work with their Education Center to have their Evaluated Degree Plan submitted on ArmyIgnitED, the Army and Air Force’s platform for managing Tuition Assistance and other educational/training activities for active-duty military. Before requesting for a third TA-funded class, if an Evaluated Degree Plan has not been submitted the account will be placed on hold, which means no new TA requests will be processed or approved until the Evaluated Degree Plan is submitted by the Education Center. Please visit the ArmyIgnitED website for more information regarding Tuition Assistance.
Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard
To apply for Tuition Assistance electronically from any computer, go to https://www.navycollege.navy.mil, and click on the My Education portal. You may log-in via CAC or with DoD EDI. Use MyEducation Home for updated announcement messages and to access the key modules. If you have used TA before, be sure all your grades have been posted (otherwise, you will not be eligible to apply for additional TA, and you could be issued a Letter of Indebtedness for not having successfully completed previous courses).
To begin your new WebTA application, select “Tuition Assistance”. Read the application agreement and if you agree with the terms, accept the TA contract, enter your profile information, command approval information, school and course details. You will receive your funding notification. Also, you must submit your Evaluated School Degree Plan before submitting the WebTA application. Please visit the My Education Portal Guide for detailed, step-by-step instructions.
If you are planning to use TA, please let San Diego Global Knowledge University know! While you are waiting for your TA to be approved, we will put a hold on your account to prevent you from getting dropped from your course due to non-payment. This saves your seat in the course without being penalized for a non-payment.
Once your TA has been approved, please submit a signed copy of your TA voucher to San Diego Global Knowledge University. You may email your signed copy to info@sdgku.edu. If you submitted a request for TA and it was not approved, you will be responsible for finding another source of payment. You are welcome to pay for the course out of pocket or apply for FAFSA to see if you qualify for State and/or Federal Aid. To apply for FAFSA, please click here.
Please note that your Student Account will reflect that you still owe money for tuition until we have processed billing and received payment from TA. San Diego Global Knowledge University will bill and report final grades 30 days after course completion.
Note: TA will only cover tuition costs. Any additional course fees associated with the course (Online materials, etc.) will have to be paid out of pocket. Please visit our Tuition and Fees webpage for specific information regarding fees.
You can pay any additional course fees separately to San Diego Global Knowledge University, either in-person at the main campus or by electronic transfer. As mentioned above, TA will not pay for classes that you received a D, F, I or W grade. You will be responsible for paying for the class either to San Diego Global Knowledge University or to TA directly.
If TA ends up paying San Diego Global Knowledge University, TA may request you to pay them directly. If you know you will receive one of the grades listed above, we recommend cancelling your TA with the Educational Center and paying for your class directly to San Diego Global Knowledge University.
Depending on the time of your drop, you may have to pay for your course if it is after the refund deadline at San Diego Global Knowledge University. Please visit our Withdrawal and Refund Policy for more information.
Servicemembers who have been deployed away from their installation during their course of studies may submit a letter requesting a late withdrawal due to military obligation with supporting documentation, such as a copy of military orders or a letter from a commanding officer. This request can be submitted as soon as military orders are available or at your convenience upon return from military obligation. You may submit a military withdrawal request directly to San Diego Global Knowledge University by email to info@sdgku.edu. Please make sure to include your basic contact information and supporting documentation, otherwise your petition will be denied. If you have any questions about this process, please contact our Director of Admissions and Registrar at (619) 934-0797.
We also advise that students meet with an admission representative to discuss alternative options to an Excused Withdrawal to be sure that this choice is the best course of action for the student’s academic career.
Servicemembers will maintain their student status if they are unable to attend classes and/or cannot complete their coursework due to service requirements that temporarily prohibit them from doing so. All servicemembers in such circumstances will be readmitted into their program of pursuit with no penalty.

Student Work Study Allowance Program (upon availability)
San Diego Global Knowledge University is approved to offer the Student Work Study Allowance Program. If you are a full-time or ¾ time student in a college degree program, or a vocational or professional program, you can “earn while you learn” with a VA Work Study allowance. Those no longer eligible for Education benefits but have an Education debt balance may potentially qualify for Work Study.
Work study positions are made available upon position vacancy. Submitted applications will be saved for evaluation for candidacy once a position is available.
VA will select students for the Work Study program based on different factors. Such factors include:
- Disability of the student.
- Ability of the student to complete the Work Study contract before the end of his/her eligibility to Education benefits.
- Job availability within normal commuting distance for the student.
- Service-connected disability—VA will give the highest priority to a veteran who has a service- connected disability rated by VA at 30% or more.
- The number of applicants selected will depend on the availability of VA-related work at your school or VA facility in your area.
The VA Work Study allowance is available to persons training under the following programs:

- Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty (38 U.S.C. Chapter 30)

You may elect to be paid in advance for 40 percent of the number of hours in your Work Study agreement, or for 50 hours, whichever is less.
